To Needle: Where I Come In

If you missed the From Farm portion of the blog, find it here.

Let me set the scene. It's 2016 I’ve been living in northern Michigan for about six months; getting to know the local yarn shops, knitting groups and fiber events in the area. For the next several months, everywhere I turn I hear about Why Knot Fibers. Often, I just miss meeting Kat; by a week at a local knitting group, by a day at the yarn shop where I work. After close to a year of this, I decide to head to a fiber show where I know Why Knot Fibers will be vending.

Around this same time, I find myself getting B-O-R-E-D with superwash merino. Don’t get me wrong, surewash merino is a great yarn and it’s great for many things. But it is not the only yarn and it is not great for everything. And I love to experiment and try new things.

When I walk into that booth and see Smitten, one of Why Knot Fibers first farm-to-needle yarns, dyed up in these rich, jewel tone, solid colors, I immediately fall in love. Then I met Kat. We got on like peanut butter and jelly. She made the mistake of asking my thoughts on a yarn blend and I haven’t stopped giving my opinion since.

Flash forward to today and I am now helping to develop new blends. I have been in the yarn business for at least 20 years; knitter turned yarn shop owner, turned teacher and designer. All those hats have given me a lot of experience to draw upon. In the coming months, I’ll be talking about our farm to needle yarns with a focus on the characteristics of each yarn in the blend and highlighting what type of projects will work well (and in some cases poorly) with each yarn.

I haven’t had this much fun in a long time. Can’t wait to see where we go from here!
